In this article we explore the Ultrapath topology as a candidate for line-stage amplifier. What tube to use, which parameters are the best, what are the requirements for the power supply? We'd like to get low distortion, low output impedance, large headroom, low noise and hum. We try several different tubes and use PSPICE to find the best configuration for each tube. Baru Lagi, Buat Master Chassis Lagi...

Senin, 18 Juli 2011. Puji Tuhan, bulan ini masuk tiga proyek baru lagi. Ketiganya berbeda, tak mengapa. Tetap saya syukuri. Bakalan capek membuat tiga master chassis baru lagi, juga tak mengapa. Satu-dua hari penuh akan habis hanya untuk mengerjakan mastering untuk ketiga top plate chassis itu, tak apa-apa lah...

Pekerjaan desain untuk penerima jasa custom made seperti saya ini memang ada beberapa tahap. Yang pertama, saya harus mendesain sirkuit. Kedua membuat budget (bill of materials, BoM) sekaligus mengumpulkan semua parts & components. Ketiga, menuangkannya ke dalam desain tata letak (layout) chassis.

LM134/LM234/LM334 Adjustable Current Sources

The LM134/LM234/LM334 are 3-terminal adjustable current sources featuring 10,000:1 range in operating current, excellent current regulation and a wide dynamic voltage range of 1V to 40V. Current is established with one external resistor and no other parts are required. Initial current accuracy is ±3%. The LM134/LM234/LM334 are true floating current sources with no separate power supply connections. In addition, reverse applied voltages of up to 20V will draw only a few dozen microamperes of current, allowing the devices to act as both a rectifier and current source in AC applications.

Class A amplifiers always have had a good reputation among audiophiles. When talking about low power designs these are in most cases designed as class A. Talking about audio power amplifiers, the picture is quite different. Here class B and A/B amplifiers play a dominant role, while class A is more seldom. BJT Cascode Amplifier Calculator

This calculator computes bias voltage and current levels, as well as gain and frequency response for the Cascode amplifier. 

The cascode amplifier has high gain and high band width.  It overcomes the Miller capacitance limitations of the common emitter amplifier by using a second transistor as common- base current buffer.  As a result it can achieve gain bandwidths orders of magnitude larger than the common emitter amplifiers.  The only cost is that a second transistor is needed, and a higher voltage supply is needed so that the transistors have decent operating margins.  

For the this cascode gain is set by the ratio of RC/RE2.  To increase bandwidth maximize the sum of RE1 and RE2.

Lagi, 1.000 Resistor Allen-Bradley

Sabtu, 9 Juli 2011. Tambahan stok resistor Allen-Bradley (USA) tiba kemarin. Lumayan, hampir 1.000 pcs, gabungan power rating 1 watt dan 2 watt. Saya bersyukur ada teman lama yang mau melepas koleksinya itu untuk saya. "Karena Pak Alex menghargai barang saya," kata teman ini.

AB adalah old carbon composite resistor, favorit saya selama ini: bagus, tidak mahal, dan saya ada stok, hehehe... Silakan kalau ada rekan yang mau bilang, "Ah kalau saya, AB akan saya buang ke laut." Bagi saya, selera adalah satu hal yang bisa subjektif. Karena itu saya menghindari pendapat arogan. Lebih baik kita cari tahu kelebihan sesuatu parts daripada mencari(cari) kelemahannya.

"Old" Rotary Switch, 4 Induk 3 Posisi

Jumat, 8 Juli 2011. Dua dus kecil berisi rotary switch kuno tiba. Ini saklar putar biasa, 3 posisi 4 induk (4 gang). Selain biasa, bentuknya juga kuno alias antik. Kontak-kontaknya terbuka, bukan vacuum (= bebas percikan api). Kiriman kali ini  kurang jelas merknya apa; bacth sebelumnya dengan fisik yang sama ada stamp logo Matshushita.

Empat Kabel Dewata Tiba

Jumat, 8 Juli 2011. Empat kabel dewata tiba tadi sore. Keempatnya adalah RCA interconnect berpanjang 1 meter. Saya membelinya khusus untuk uji-coba memilih mana yang tercocok suaranya dengan pre/power amp yang saya buat, terutama unit premium seperti "Angel #26". Yang terpilih akan digunakan sebagai kabel internal, tepatnya pada posisi signal hookup wire.

Jordan 15" Powered SubWoofer, Gara-gara Elco Sekarat

Senin, 4 Juli 2011. Sebuah sub-woofer aktif "sak gajah" (15" powered sub-woofer) naik ke meja bedah saya. Tentu saja bukan seluruh badannya, hanya modul elektronik yang menempel di belakangnya saja yang saya lepaskan.

Boro-boro saya menaikkan seluruh badannya ke meja, wong menggesernya saja di lantai saya nggak entos (becus) saking beratnya. Ini sebuah Jordan hitam mengkilap, saya lupa tipenya, milik tetangga.

"502-BS Visaton" Speaker, Step by Step

Prototipe "502-BS Visaton".

Perancangan speaker bookshelf  "502-BS Visaton" berawal dari sini, bahwa kabinet telah tersedia sehingga saya tak memiliki cukup ruang gerak. Tapi ok lah, ini tantangan bagi saya... Bagaimana merancang sistem speaker dengan kabinet yang tersedia, dan bukan berangkat dari rekomendasi volume kabinet berdasarkan perhitungan kebutuhan optimal woofer.

Kabinet yang tersedia adalah 7 liter internal, tinggi eksternal 30 cm, dan ukuran diameter port internal 3,75 cm. Aduh... volume boks terlampau kecil, sebab menurut catatan aplikasi Visaton, pada closed box saja Visaton SC13 membutuhkan volume 10 liter.

Oh..., jangan khawatir, saya akan coba menghitungnya, mencari pendekatan optimal bagi SC13 pada 7 liter vented box. Simulator software "BassBox 6 Pro" (BB6) membantu saya dalam menentukan tuning boks (fb). Catatan: BB6 ini cuma pinjaman teman, saya belum mampu membelinya, hehehe....

Visaton SC13, 5" Fullrange Driver

Visaton SC13, bertampang biasa saja.

Awal Juli 2011. Saya memakai driver 5" (13 cm) fullrange ini, Visaton SC13, pada proyek speaker prototip "502-BS Visaton". Oleh Visaton, SC13 dikategorikan fullrange karena amplitude response-nya up to 13 kHz, dengan sensitivitas 90dB @1W/1m. Lumayan untuk pemula yang ingin coba-coba membuat sendiri sebuah speaker yang lumayan fullrange dan lumayan sensitif.

Sebelumnya, sudah lama saya ingin memakainya untuk proyek lain yang belum terlaksana, yaitu sebagai unit satelit pada "2.1 Sub-Satellite Speaker System", bersama tweeter Visaton SC5. Semua driver tersedia, gambar rancangan sudah siap,  namun apa boleh buat, waktunya yang belum cocok.

Minggu, 3 Juli 2011. Seharian tadi saya ngebut mengerjakan rancangan crossover (XO) proyek "502-BS Visaton", sebuah sistem speaker bookshelf 2 way dengan woofer 5" buatan Visaton (Jerman). Uh....

Barangkali, inilah proyek speaker paling cepat selesai selama saya berkecimpung dalam pembuatan sistem loudspeaker. Hanya sehari....! Dan malam tadi, prototipnya sudah dijemput pemesan, siap untuk diberikan feedback.

Sabtu, 2 Juli 2011, pagi-siang. Dua orang teman datang ke workshop saya di udik Cibubur, ingin memeriksakan amplifier MOSFET-nya. Ia seorang konsultan bidang edukasi sosial. Sembari sama-sama memeriksa amplifiernya, buatan saya, yang ternyata tidak apa-apa itu, kami ngobrol ngalor-ngidul (bukan soal audio).... aha, baru ingat kalau teman ini membawa kabel speaker yang baru dibeli.

Vademekum Elektronika, Hadiah Teman

Edisi pertama (kiri), edisi kedua (kanan).

Akhir Juni 2011. Sebuah paket Tiki tiba di rumah. Eh..., sebuah buku Vademekum Elektronika, Wasito S, edisi kedua. Teman saya menghadiahkannya setelah menawarkannya secara gratis dalam sebuah posting di milis Elpop-Audio. Terima kasih Pak Sugiono Lie (Jakarta).

Saya baru menyadari kalau telah memiliki buku tersebut namun edisi pertama, yang saya beli 13 September 1984 (27 tahun lalu). Sampul edisi pertama berwarna coklat, edisi kedua berwarna putih. Edisi kedua jauh lebih tebal (dua kali lipat). Saya intip harga belinya, Rp 5.500 (1984) dan Rp 85.000 (2006), hehehe....

Dua kali lipat lebih tebal.

Berikut ini perbedaannya (urut: edisi pertama, edisi kedua):

• Sampul: coklat, putih.
• Jumlah halaman: 391+18, 763+32.

802-BS Speaker Series, Cabinet Workmanship

Juni 2010. Tak terasa telah setahun saya mulai membuat lagi beberapa speaker bookshelf 8" 2-way di workshop pribadi saya di Cibubur. Untuk memudahkan dokumentasi, saya mengelompokkannya dengan kode "802-BS". Maksudnya, 8", 2-way, bookshelf.

Semuanya menggunakan bahan MDF (medium density fiberboard).
